What Is Calorie Counting and Should I Do It? 

Calories do count but not everyone need count them!

What Is Calorie Counting?

Calorie counting is the method of recording the calorie (or kilojoule) amount of each and every food and drink you consume every day. It can be done using a food journal, diet software, or by simply recording the information on a spreadsheet. Alternately calorie-based meal plans can be prepared in advance and then followed exactly.

Do Calories Count?

There are two main opinions on this:

  • Calories and only calories matter and must be counted.
  • Calories don't matter - it's the macro-nutrients (i.e. carbs, protein, fats) that mean everything.

As a matter of energy intake and output, calories mean everything. As for health and nutrition, the macro-nutrients do matter. Think about this: If you decided to go on an 1800 calorie per day diet - would you consume all your 1800 calories from diet soda? Or live on a diet of 100% fat? Probably not. So macro-nutrients do matter to some degree.

So what's the answer? If you are trying to lose weight then calories do count, and depending on your individual body consititution - macronutrient ratios will also have impact on the success of your fat loss program. This is why a section of the population do respond to low-carb diets, and others respond to low-fat.

Get the calories right first - THEN experiment with nutrient ratios.

But I Hate Counting Calories!

You are not alone. Calorie counting is not for everyone, it can make eating food that was enjoyable into a painful obsessive ritual. It works well for some, but not for others. However, you need to get some idea of the quantity of food that gives you weight loss success. Eating until satiation (i.e. until you're full) is not always reliable.

It can be worth calorie counting for a week or two - then once you've figured out the portions of food that are working for you, you can stop being obsessive and wing it. If you have problems with portion distortion - then 'winging it' may not be wise.

How Do I Count Calories?

Do It Yourself

If you want to do-it-yourself, you have to determine the calorie amounts of all food you are going to eat or have eaten. They must be recorded on a daily basis. You will also need to set your daily calorie amount for weight loss. It can take time, and it is not for everyone.

How Do I Treat Stretch Marks? 

Stretch marks occur during weight gain (often rapid weight gain - such as during pregnancy). The stretch mark is the result of the dermis layer of the skin (the middle layer) stretching enough that the connective fibers break. Over time stretch marks can become a different color to normal skin tone - making them more pronounced.

For those who have lost considerable amounts of weight, stretch marks can become noticeable over time, as well as excess skin.

Stretch Mark Removal

Removing stretch marks is not easy. Some over-the-counter skin treatments (oils and lotions) can help the skin to become more supple and soft but they won't completely remove the stretch marks. The best way is through laser surgery - unfortunately the price puts it out of reach for most people.

Laser Surgery

Cosmetic laser surgery can reduce stretch marks anywhere on the body, including the abdomen, arms, chest and thighs. The skin is heated up and the damaged layers on top evaporate while the natural collagen underneath is remodeled into newer skin.

Expect to pay about $600-$700 per session and probably 6-8 sessions (totalling $5000-$6000). Some people find the procedure painful, while others find it just uncomfortable. There are no guarantees of complete success, but this is the most successful method of removing stretch marks.

Topical Creams

OHT Peptide-3 is (apparently) the most successful over-the-counter product for treating stretch marks. One bottle applied two times daily lasts 4 months. However we have no verification as to the success of this.

Prescription creams such as Retin-A have been found to improve the appearance of stretch marks (reducing the redness in newer stretch marks).

Note that Retin-A is only appropriate for some pink stretch marks (not silver or pale marks or stretch marks over 1 year old).

Another popular treatment is StriVectin SD as recently featured on ABC's TheView. People seem to experience mixed results, and the product is not the best choice.

These treatments can seem expensive ($120-$140), but when compared with laser treatment - they are cheap - but results are mixed.

Does Stress and Cortisol Make You Fat? 

It seems that every time science uncovers some type of association between body fat and anything, opportunistic entrepreneurs are waiting in the shadows to create a product and a marketing campaign around it. They ride the wave into the multi millions, until the buzz dies down or until the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) sues and slaps a padlock on their warehouse doors. Then, it’s on to the “next big thing in weight loss,” because they know there will always be a gullible crowd eagerly waiting for the next quick fix.

The most recent example is when researchers discovered a correlation between cortisol and abdominal body fat. Cortisol was then blamed as the latest culprit in the obesity problem, and cortisol-suppressing pills were touted as the “miracle solution.”

Big Claims, Little Proof

After a web search on the subject of cortisol, here are some of the claims you may find:

  • Stress makes you fat
  • Cortisol is what makes you fat
  • Cortisol reducing supplements control stress reduction.
  • Cortisol reducing supplements reduce belly fat
  • Cortisol reducing supplements get rid of “stress fat”
  • Cortisol reducing supplements balance hormone levels that cause stress
  • Cortisol reducing supplements increase muscle growth
  • Cortisol supplements suppress appetite
  • Cortisol supplements speed up metabolism

The advertising claims include just enough scientific fact to make even the savviest consumers say, “That makes sense, I think I’ll try that.” They also hit home emotionally by focusing on common hot buttons such as stress (who isn’t at least a little stressed in this day and age?) Brilliant marketing. Convincing. Unfortunately, most of the claims being made are completely false, with only a tiny thread of truth woven in.

Cortisol is a very important hormone that you must understand if you want to get maximum results from your training and nutrition programs, but if you don’t educate yourself, you may become one of the millions of victims to fall for the latest fads. The answers to the frequently asked questions in this article will arm you with the science-based facts, while helping you steer clear of the hype-based scams.

What is Cortisol?

Cortisol is a hormone produced by your adrenal glands. It falls into a category of hormones known as “glucocorticoids”, referring to their ability to increase blood glucose levels. Cortisol is the primary glucocorticoid.

Why Does Your Body Produce Cortisol?

Cortisol is a stress hormone. Your body produces cortisol in response to stress, physical, mental or emotional. This can include extremely low calorie diets, intense training, high volume training, lack of quality sleep as well as common daily stresses such as job pressures, fights with your spouse or being caught in a traffic jam. Trauma, injury and surgery are also major stressors to the body (much of the research done on cortisol and stress has been done on recovering patients, and such findings may not carry over to healthy, athletic populations).

What Does Cortisol Do?

Cortisol is part of the fight or flight response. Faced with a “life or death” situation, cortisol increases the flow of glucose (as well as protein and fat) out of your tissues and into the bloodstream in order to increase energy and physical readiness to handle the stressful situation or threat.

How Do You Know Whether Your Cortisol Levels Are High?

You can get your cortisol levels tested if you choose to. The most common method of testing is a blood test (blood cortisol levels). Saliva and 24 hour urine tests are also available.

What is a Normal Level of Cortisol?

Cortisol levels are higher in adults than children and levels fluctuate throughout each 24 hour period, so tests must account for the time of day. Cortisol concentrations are highest in the early morning around 6 – 8 a.m. and they are also elevated after exercise (a normal part of your body’s response to exercise). The lowest levels are usually around midnight. According to the Medline Encyclopedia, normal levels of cortisol in the bloodstream at 8:00 a.m. are 6-23 mcg/dl.

Should You Get Your Cortisol Levels Tested?

For serious competitive athletes, it may be worth the time, expense and inconvenience to have cortisol tests done on a regular basis. Some strength and conditioning coaches insist on it. For the average trainee, as long as you are aware of the factors that produce excessive cortisol and take steps to keep it in the normal, healthy range, then testing is probably not necessary.

Is Cortisol Related to Abdominal Obesity?

Yes. There is a link between high cortisol levels and storage of body fat, particularly “visceral” abdominal body fat (also known as intra-abdominal fat). Visceral fat is stored deeper in the abdominal cavity and around the internal organs, whereas “regular” fat is stored below the skin (known as subcutaneous fat). Visceral fat is particularly unhealthy because it is a risk factor for heart disease and diabetes.

Does Cortisol Make You Fat?

No, cortisol is not “the thing” that makes you fat. In fact, one of the effects of cortisol is to increase the breakdown of stored adipose tissue into glycerol and fatty acids where it can enter the bloodstream and then be used as energy. High levels of cortisol are merely one contributing factor to storage of abdominal fat, not the primary cause. An excess of calories from too much food and not enough exercise is what makes you fat.

Will taking a Cortisol Suppressing Pill get rid of Abdominal (belly) Fat?

No. Just because there is an association between high cortisol levels and abdominal body fat doesn’t mean that a taking a cortisol-suppressing pill will remove abdominal body fat. The studies which showed a relationship between cortisol and body fat did not test whether suppressing cortisol removes fat that is already deposited on your body.

Does Stress Make You Fat?

No. If it did, then everyone who is stressed would be gaining fat. Many people lose weight while under stress. In some studies, test subjects with the highest cortisol levels lost the most weight. Stress, by itself, does not increase body fat. However, if stress stimulates appetite and leads to overeating, then the excess calories from “stress eating” can make you fatter.

Is Cortisol Bad For You?

Cortisol is not “bad for you,” it is a hormone that is essential for life as part of our natural stress response. There are many hormones in our bodies, which in the proper amounts, maintain good health, but in excess or in deficiency, contribute to health problems. Cortisol is no different. You want to maintain a healthy, normal level of cortisol, not suppress your cortisol to nothing or allow it to remain elevated.

Chronically elevated cortisol levels may have a variety of negative effects. Cortisol is catabolic and elevated cortisol levels can cause the loss of muscle tissue by facilitating the process of converting lean tissue into glucose. An excess of cortisol can also lead to a decrease in insulin sensitivity, increased insulin resistance, reduced kidney function, hypertension, suppressed immune function, reduced growth hormone levels, and reduced connective tissue strength. Chronically elevated levels of cortisol can also decrease strength and performance in athletes. Incidentally, Cushing’s syndrome is a disease of high cortisol levels, while Addison’s is a disease of low cortisol levels.

How do you Spot a Weight Loss Pill Scam?

The cortisol pill is just one in a long string of bogus weight loss products, and it won’t be the last! Why? Because weight loss supplements are big business! Eight or nine figure fortunes have been made from the sales of a single product, which was later proven to be a total farce.

How do you protect yourself? Do your homework! Don’t take anything unless you know exactly what’s in the product, why it’s in the product and how much is in the product. Review the scientific research. Don’t buy a weight loss product just because a radio personality says it works! Don’t jump on the phone with your credit card in hand after watching a thirty-minute infomercial! In this day and age, you have to be smarter than that!

The United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is the government agency responsible for monitoring deceptive advertising. Recently, the FTC published their new ‘RED FLAG” brochure and their deception in advertising workshop, designed to help advertising media and consumers to screen out bogus weight loss claims for nonprescription drugs, supplements, creams, wraps, devices and patches.

Conclusions

Excessive cortisol is not good. But cortisol is not inherently bad; it’s a vitally important hormone and part of your body’s natural stress response. Cortisol does not make you fat. Stress does not make you fat. Stress may lead to increased appetite… Increased appetite may lead to eating too much… Eating too much makes you gain fat. Make sense?

Cortisol suppressing agents may have some practical uses. But rather than thinking of cortisol supplements as a weight loss miracle (which they most surely are not), get yourself on a solid exercise and nutrition program and seek natural ways enhance recovery and reduce stress. By doing this first, you may be pleasantly surprised to find that you’re losing fat and gaining muscle and there isn’t even a need to take a supplement at all.

How Do I Treat Cellulite? 

Most of us know what cellulite is - that odd rippled or dimply skin, typically located around the hips, thighs, and buttock area. Cellulite occurs predominantly in women, but does occur in men.

What is Cellulite?

Cellulite is not a scientific or medical term; it was first used in the 1970s in an article written by a New York salon owner. The correct medical term for cellulite is localized lipodystrophy. Which really means localized fat. Everyone has different skin structure, skin tone, and levels of body fat - which is why some people have cellulite, and some do not.

Top Cellulite Treatments

What cellulite treatments are available? There are a lot of treatments, ranging from cellulite creams, ointments, and even cellulite pills. But do they work? This is a difficult question to answer.

Cellulite is fat - meaning that other fat loss techniques can be used - but it is a special kind of fat.

Good diet, plenty of exercise and fresh air are the first step. There is no magic or miracle cure. Cellulite creams and lotions are intended to aid in production of collagen and to detoxify/re-hydrate the skin (see below).

Cellulite Creams and Lotions

The active ingredient of most cellulite or thigh creams is aminophylline. Clinical trials have been carried out, and show that size reductions can and do happen in the applied area. This is typically a diuretic affect (removing water). As far as we know, no over-the-counter cream can penetrate the skin to "burn" fat tissue.

Drugstore.com have a range of well-priced cellulite treatment creams - with the BodyLift range being particularly popular. The act of applying the creams (by massaging the skin) can help raise blood circulation, and lymphatic drainage - but this must be done regularly to help in any way. But please note that there are no simple, instant, quick fixes. Most of these treatments will aid in reducing the cellulite effect, - but there are some women who have low body fat - and still have cellulite.

Can Body Wraps Cause Weight Loss? 

Body wraps are a non-surgical treatment that promise to tighten your skin and help you lose weight. They are essentially bandages that are soaked in various solutions. Most body wraps are administered in weight loss spas and beauty salons.

The body wrap exfoliates and detoxifies the skin -- which is apparently what causes any potential weight loss. However - it is obvious the body wrap may help you lose inches off your waistline (due to a tightening and firming of the skin) - but this does not equate to fat loss.

Many enjoy the body wrap experience and claim to feel revitalize and toned.

What are Prescription Diet Pills? 

There are a number of FDA approved prescription weight loss drugs. These prescription diet pills are generally short-term solutions, and available to those with a BMI over 27. Diet pills can be ordered on-line but we do not advise this unless you already have a current prescription.

All pills have some kind of side effects. Please be careful and make sure you see your doctor first.

Phentermine
This diet pill is an appetite suppressant for short term use. Comes in 3 strengths - 15, 30, and 37 milligrams.

Xenical (Orlistat)
The Xenical prescription diet pill works by reducing the body's ability to absorb dietary fat by about one third. Use alongside diet, exercise, and behavior therapy. Approved for longer term use.

Despite being heavily advertised, Xenical has some particularly difficult side effects. Because Xenical attempts to dispose fat that youe have consumed, many people report lots of trips to the bathroom, including foul-smelling oily excretions (particularly if they have overdone fatty foods). Doesn't seem quite so glamorous as the ads would have us believe.

Here are some common side effects from Xenical:

  • Oily or fatty bowel movements (stools)
  • Increased number of bowel movements
  • Urgent need and/or inability to control bowel movement
  • Bowel movements that are orange or brown in colour
  • Gas with discharge
  • Oily discharge
  • Stomach pain
  • Irregular menstrual periods.

Bontril (Phendimetrazine)
Slow-release appetite suppressant diet pill approved for short-term use. Used along with diet, exercise, and behavior therapy.

Tenuate (Diethylpropion)
Appetite suppressant diet pill for short term use. Supplement to diet and exercise in the treatment of obesity.

Adipex, Ionamin (Phentermine)
Appetite suppressant diet pills for short term use. Supplement to diet and exercise in the treatment of obesity.

Meridia (Sibutramine)
Meridia is a short-term diet pill intended to supplement to diet and exercise in the treatment of obesity. Meridia affects chemicals in the body that are related to weight maintenance.

Most Diet Pills Suppress Appetite

Most of these diet pills suppress your appetite so you feel less hungry. They work by changing levels of brain chemicals (neurotransmitters) that affect mood and appetite. Some of the diet pills may also slightly increase the rate at which your body burns calories (basal metabolic rate).

Some diet pills do work with some people but should complement a healthy lifestyle and good eating patterns.

What are Carb Blockers and Do They Work? 

Over the last few years the popularity of very low carb diets has blossomed. In particular the Atkins diet has become incredibly popular, despite the unanswered impact on long-term health.

This fad has created a distrust of carbohydrates. Some people see carbs as being fat causing.

Not surprisingly, many enterprising supplement and nutrition manufacturers have seen an opportunity. And along come "Carb-Blocker pills" (formerly called starch blockers) - a kind of diet pill that claims to let you eat carbs, but not have the consequences. We can't help viewing this with some cynicism. Quotes like "Do the Atkins diet without the diet" are just plain silly.

 

Do you need a Carb Blocker pill?

Taking a carb blocker means you have decided that a very low carb diet is for you.

A few points to think about -

  • Carbohydrates are the bodies primary energy source.
  • Very low carb diets have helped some people achieve short term weight loss - but may not be a good choice for long term health.
  • Do not start a low carb diet without making sure you are fully informed (see the article Low Carb Intelligence).
  • When it comes to carbs that are fattening - think "refined" carbs - like white flour, white sugar, soft drinks, white bread, etc.
  • There is some credibility with carb blockers due to their relationship with Diabetes research (see below).
  • Carb Blocker pills only make some sense for people who are on a low carb diet, but who struggle to maintain the low carb regimen (e.g. you just can't resist the fries or bread).
  • I know we all want quick-fixes, but remember that often the quick-fixes may work in the short term, but 1 or 2 years later you can find yourself back where you started.

Do Carb Blockers work?

This is a difficult question to answer.

Most Carb Blockers are composed of an extract of Phaseolus Vulgaris (botanical name for the kidney bean). The pills are often supplemented with other ingredients such as chromium, vanadium, and fenugreek.

The premise of carb blockers is that they will prevent the enzyme alpha-amylase from binding with starches. This enzyme is produced in saliva and will break down the carbohydrates into molecules that the body will absorb. By preventing this process from happening, the carbohydrate will pass through the body.

Some of the study into carb blockers pills came out of Diabetes research, to help the diabetic control their insulin response. Most manufacturers cite clinical trials, but these are conducted internally and are not peer reviewed.

In some ways we really only have anecdotal evidence to go by. This is generally the case with most diet supplements.

Only you can determine if a carb blocker can work for you.

Are Diet Patches For Real? 

Weight Loss patches (or Diet Patches) are a form of medication that release herbal nutrients through the skin. The idea is to provide a consistent dose of medication over a long period of time. Patches are often used by those who have trouble remembering to take pills with regularity. A number of treatments have been distributed this way - such as Nicorette anti-smoking medication, and even Hormone Replacement Therapy for women.

Some transdermal patches are a valid method for drug dosage (such as Estrogen delivery). However, the weight loss or diet patch lies in a 'grey area' of medical science. Diet patches are not (to our knowledge) FDA approved.

Diet Patches work by using appetite suppression?

Most diet patches claim that the herbal ingredients in the patch will burn fat, suppress appetite, and stimulate metabolism. The jury is out on this one, as often it is hard to isolate the effect of the patch from dieting and exercising.

It is hard to see how a patch could burn fat, however there may certainly be appetite suppression effects and/or metablism effects (similar to herbal diet pills).

Weight loss Patch Recommendations

As stated above, we are unsure of the success of weight loss patches. However if you intend trying out a diet patch, the largest and most reputable stockist is 1-800-Patches. They have a range of different patches, and all are shipped free / and or with free trials.

What Should I Drink When Losing Weight? 

If you are trying to lose fat, what you drink is every bit as important as what you eat. Many drinks and fruit juices are high in sugars and will not aid fat loss.

Drink Plenty of Water

The Number One Rule! Drink lots of water! The benefits are many.

Cut Down on the Alcohol

We've all heard of the term 'beer-belly' or 'beerpot'. However its not just consumption of large quantities of beer that can make us fat. Alcohol has other attributes that can make fat loss so much harder.

Everything in moderation - and when it comes to alcohol one or two drinks should be a maximum. However alcohol interferes with the bodies ability to burn fat. Most of us know how large alcohol consumption can adversely affect liver function. The liver is one of the organs primarily responsible for metabolising fat.

Alcohol is also a strong diuretic (causing the body to flush water), which goes completely against the advice of drinking lots of water. Many alcohols (beer) also have a high number of calories. Alcohol has 7 calories per gram (slightly below fat which has 9 calories per gram).

Binge drinking is not an option for anyone looking to lose weight and become healthier. Don't do it! Stick to light beer or the occasional wine.

What About Coffee?

Yes we've all been told we drink too much coffee. But to be honest - a cup or two a day will not affect a weight loss program. Just don't overdo it.

Many diet pills and supplements have caffeine included as part of the active ingredients - but this doesn't mean we should start drinking lots of coffee. If you're really serious, then try to minimize the amount of high-fat milks (no creamy latte's).

Caffeine is a diuretic and can cause fluid loss - so remember to drink extra water if you're having coffee.

Diet Drinks and Low-calorie Drinks

Tea, diet drinks, diet soda are okay to drink - but remember - water is the best way to hydrate your body. Many so-called sports drinks often contain high-levels of sugar, and should only be consumed in moderation.

Diet sodas have little or no Calories - but, as yet, do not appear to be linked to weight loss. This may be due to artificial sweeteners leading people to crave the real thing (i.e. sugary foods). Or it could be a psychological effect ("I've been drinking diet soda all day - so now I'm allowed to eat this cake".

Can Green Tea Help Weight Loss? 

Is Green Tea just another faddish nutritional supplement?

Not by any means. Green Tea has been a part of the Chinese diet for over 3000 years. Recent research has proven that there are a significant number of health benefits that come from drinking green tea, or including a green tea extract in our diet.

Cancer prevention/inhibition, antioxidant applications, weight control, anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties have all been researched to some degree. Some reports show green tea may have the ability to help prevent certain cancers from developing. Green tea contains chemicals known as polyphenols, which have antioxidant properties. An antioxidant is a compound that blocks the action of activated oxygen molecules, known as free radicals, that can damage cells.

Origins and Background

Green Tea comes from the same plant (Camellia Sinensis) as traditional black tea. Green Tea is produced by steaming fresh leaves at high temperatures - therefore leaving a significant part of the nutritional and enzyme content intact. Production of black tea uses the dried and fermented leaves.

Three cups a day or more is the amount of Green Tea typically taken in Asian countries. The tea is usually brewed using 1 to 2 teaspoons of the dried tea in a cup of boiling water, or is steeped for 3 to 15 minutes. Green tea extracts are also available in capsule form.

Green Tea for Weight Loss

There is no such thing as a 'miracle' weight loss food or drug - however there are many indications that Green Tea brings a number of benefits to those trying lose weight:

Studies have also shown green tea extracts are capable of reducing fat digestion by inhibiting digestive enzymes. Others have shown thermogenic properties of green tea (probably brought on by the interaction between its caffeine content, and catechin polyphenols)1. Thermogenesis is the process of the body burning fuel (fat) without making chemical energy (the calories are released as heat).

However if you are overweight or obese - and change nothing else in your life except to start drinking green tea - you are not going to have an instant weight loss miracle - but you will be giving yourself an edge.

Combined with other weight loss techniques, Green Tea (drink or extract) is an excellent addition to your diet.

A recent Oprah Winfrey show featuring Dr Perricone mentioned the benefits of green tea, and led to a lot of positive publicity about Green Tea. Here is a transcript of the show:

Oprah: Now I've read in your book that you said if I just replaced coffee with green tea instead, that I could lose 10 pounds in six weeks.

Dr. Perricone: Absolutely.

Oprah: Now really. How could that -- what is the big deal about this?

Dr Perricone: Coffee has organic acids that raise your blood sugar, raise insulin. Insulin puts a lock on body fat. When you switch over to green tea, you get your caffeine, you're all set, but you will drop your insulin levels and body fat will fall very rapidly. So 10 pounds in six weeks, I will guarantee it.
